about

The juxtaposition of childhood and present life, and the implausibility of reconciliation ever occurring between the two. Repeated forever until we perish, and you explain it again and again to yourself and those you care about. Then you return to that place and you ponder if it was anything more than a self-made myth; not that it matters to you.

I think I wrote this one in the middle of 2012 summer, and it was partially inspired by the very dreamy atmosphere of The Police's song "Once Upon a Daydream". Of course, anyone familiar with that song knows that this song is not nearly as somber or hopeless sounding. Or as technically brilliant; seriously what a fantastic song by Andy Summers and Sting (it goes without saying that Stewart Copeland is brilliant).

Anyways, I also sought to pay a bit of homage in the drum's production and chiming guitars to the early R.E.M. records from 1982-1985. Of course, I don't think I can pull off the pure sense of youthful energy quite as well. After all, R.E.M. (and The Police for that matter) were actually a band's band while I remain something else entirely...

lyrics

Dragging down the dream
show them exactly what it means
again and again and again and again (x2)

See the ashes upon yourself,
upon myself
again and again and again and again (x2)

But you don't mean a single thing, don't know what it is
Recall youth, recall (I guess) it's true

So I guess it's too much to say, too much to take
it's all for you, I guess it's true

See her hounds
her plastic shoe
you wonder why

I guess it's burnt lips, I guess it's something else
But I guess I've learned by myself, "well..."

I guess it's burnt lips, there's nothing else
Remind yourself that I won't be there

twenty-thousand papers against the school yard fence
Just another lesson erasing their names
smoldering their past, it's a case of arrogance
A fleeting memory or a summer test

but even after
the epilogue is written
if I went back and had you
with no pretense or bitter values

I know that I'd tell you
again and again and again and again
that's how it always ends
